Having a workspace for tying flies is more important than one may realize. Working with materials scattered about can lead to frustration when trying to track down a set of hackle pliers buried under tying material.
I was guilty of this so I decided to build my own portable work table. While I do have some woodworking skills, they are not totally required to produce a bench which can provide all your tools and materials well within reach and completely visible.
Materials I used were few including some walnut wood from a previous project and the bobbin holder was purchased at a local mart store. The bobbin holder was cut down to half its size as I only work with a few bobbins at a time and it keeps scanning for bobbins to a minimum. The base material was actually an old cutting board but this can also be purchased at your local mart store. Holes were drilled without a drillpress but I did use a set of Forstner bits for the holes which do not go through the walnut boards. You can drill your holes wherever you feel a need or change the size for your needs as well.
The enjoyment of building your own bench is just as satisfying as catching a nice fish on your own tied fly!
